Definition

California is a state located on the west coast of the United States, bordering Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona to the east, Mexico to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It became the 31st state of the United States on September 9, 1850.

California matters because it is one of the world's largest economic centers, a leader in technology, agriculture, entertainment, higher education, tourism, and scientific research. If California were measured as an independent economy, it would rank among the largest economies in the world.

People encounter California every day through Hollywood films, television programs, music, technology companies, fashion, agriculture, wine, sports, tourism, and internationally recognized brands that originated within the state.

Why California Matters

California has influenced modern life in countless ways. Silicon Valley helped shape the digital age through innovations in computing, software, smartphones, artificial intelligence, and the internet. Hollywood transformed global entertainment through filmmaking, television production, and streaming content. Meanwhile, California's farms help feed millions of people by producing fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy products, and other agricultural goods distributed throughout the world.

The state is equally important for education and research. Universities, medical centers, laboratories, and research institutions located across California contribute to advances in medicine, engineering, environmental science, aerospace, and many other fields. Entrepreneurs, artists, scientists, students, and travelers continue to be drawn to California because of its reputation for creativity and opportunity.

Tourism is another major part of California's identity. Millions of visitors arrive every year to experience its beaches, mountains, deserts, national parks, wine regions, amusement parks, museums, shopping districts, and diverse culinary scene.

History

Long before European exploration, California was home to numerous Indigenous peoples who developed thriving communities, languages, and cultures across the region. These societies lived in environments ranging from coastal areas and forests to deserts and mountain valleys, adapting their traditions to California's diverse landscapes.

During the sixteenth century, European explorers began reaching California's coastline. Spanish missions were later established throughout much of the region, influencing settlement patterns, agriculture, architecture, and cultural development. Mexico governed California after gaining independence from Spain in 1821.

California became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War, and in 1850 it officially entered the Union as the 31st state. That same era saw the California Gold Rush attract hundreds of thousands of people from around the world, dramatically increasing the state's population and accelerating economic growth.

Throughout the twentieth century, California continued expanding through agriculture, manufacturing, aerospace, higher education, entertainment, technology, and international trade. Today it remains one of the most dynamic and economically influential regions in the world.
