Overview
JR East operates high-frequency commuter services throughout Tokyo and neighboring prefectures, including well-known routes such as the Yamanote Line, Chuo Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, Keiyo Line, Yokosuka Line, and sections of the Tokaido Main Line. Regional trains extend the network into northern and central areas of eastern Japan.
The company also operates the Tohoku, Joetsu, Yamagata, Akita, and sections of the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Limited express services include the Narita Express, Hitachi, Tokiwa, Azusa, Kaiji, Odoriko, and other trains connecting major cities, airports, resorts, and regional destinations.
JR East stations provide ticketing facilities, automatic fare gates, platforms, passenger information, shops, toilets, lockers, and connections to local transportation. Facilities differ by station, with major terminals offering travel service centers, reserved-seat ticket offices, restaurants, hotels, and extensive interchange access.
Stations and Passenger Facilities
JR East stations range from small regional stops to major metropolitan terminals. Standard facilities may include ticket vending machines, automatic fare gates, platforms, route maps, toilets, lockers, shops, waiting areas, and passenger information displays.
Major stations may also provide JR EAST Travel Service Centers, reserved-seat ticket machines, staffed ticket offices, restaurants, hotels, luggage services, and extensive connections to local railways, subways, buses, taxis, and airport transport.
Transfers Between Trains
Passengers can transfer between JR East commuter, regional, limited express, and Shinkansen services at designated interchange stations. Some transfers remain within the paid area, while others require passengers to pass through a separate ticket gate.
Travelers should follow station signs carefully and allow additional time at large terminals such as Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ueno, Omiya, and Sendai. Platform assignments may change according to operating conditions.
Tickets and Fare Payment
Passengers can purchase paper tickets from station vending machines and staffed ticket offices. Basic fares are generally calculated according to the distance traveled, with additional charges applying to reserved seats, limited express trains, Green Cars, and Shinkansen services.
Tickets may also be reserved through JR-EAST Train Reservation. Collection requirements depend on the product, route, and payment method selected during booking.
Suica
Suica is JR East’s rechargeable contactless fare card. Passengers can tap the card at compatible ticket gates for travel on local trains, subways, buses, and other participating transport systems.
Suica can be used only within supported fare areas and generally cannot be used for continuous travel between separate IC-card regions. Passengers crossing unsupported boundaries should purchase the required paper ticket in advance.
Shinkansen and Limited Express Tickets
Shinkansen journeys normally require both a basic fare and a Shinkansen express ticket. Limited express trains may also require an additional express ticket and, on selected services, a seat reservation.
Eligible passengers can use Shinkansen or limited express e-ticket services by linking a compatible IC card to an online reservation. Boarding requirements differ by service, so travelers should confirm whether a physical ticket, IC card, or both are needed.
Rail Passes
JR East offers regional rail passes for eligible international visitors and other qualifying passengers. Coverage, validity periods, permitted trains, reserved-seat conditions, and eligibility requirements vary by pass.
Passes may be purchased through JR-EAST Train Reservation, selected ticket offices, or authorized travel agencies. A valid original passport may be required for purchase or collection.
Operating Services
JR East trains operate daily, with schedules and service frequency varying by line, station, and time of day. Metropolitan commuter lines generally run frequently, while rural and regional routes may have longer intervals.
Service changes can occur because of maintenance, severe weather, earthquakes, accidents, congestion, or special operating arrangements. Passengers should check current train-status information before beginning long or time-sensitive journeys.
Passenger Rules and Baggage
Passengers should keep aisles, doors, platforms, and priority seating areas clear. Smoking is prohibited except in designated areas, and travelers should avoid activities that disturb other passengers.
Personal luggage must be safely stored without obstructing walkways or seating. Oversized, dangerous, flammable, or prohibited items may be restricted. Shinkansen passengers carrying very large baggage should confirm whether advance seat arrangements are required.
Accessibility and Passenger Assistance
Accessible routes, elevators, escalators, tactile paving, accessible toilets, and boarding assistance are available at many JR East stations. Facilities vary according to station size, age, and local infrastructure.
Passengers requiring assistance should contact station staff or arrange support in advance, particularly when traveling through smaller stations or using mobility equipment.
