Philippine National Railways is the government-owned railway corporation responsible for operating and maintaining parts of the national railway system in Luzon. Commonly known as PNR, it provides regional and commuter passenger services and supports the development of railway transportation in the Philippines.
PNR is an attached agency of the Department of Transportation. Its current passenger operations are concentrated on sections of the South Main Line in Laguna, Quezon, Camarines Sur, and Albay, while its former Metro Manila commuter service remains suspended to accommodate construction of the North–South Commuter Railway.

Overview
Philippine National Railways operates conventional passenger trains on available sections of the South Main Line. Current services include regional operations between parts of Laguna and Quezon and local railway services within the Bicol Region.
The railway serves passengers traveling between selected cities, municipalities, and provincial communities. Stations generally provide boarding areas, ticketing services, waiting spaces, and access to local transportation, although facilities differ according to location.
PNR previously operated regular commuter trains between Metro Manila and southern Luzon. These services were suspended in March 2024 to allow construction work for the North–South Commuter Railway, a separate modern railway project intended to replace portions of the existing metropolitan corridor.
Rail Services and Passenger Facilities
Philippine National Railways operates conventional diesel-powered passenger trains on available sections of the South Main Line. Services may include regional trains connecting neighboring provinces and local commuter operations serving communities within the Bicol Region.
Facilities differ among stations. Larger stations may provide ticket counters, sheltered waiting areas, seating, toilets, information boards, and direct access to local transportation. Smaller stops may have basic platforms and limited passenger amenities.
Metro Manila Service Suspension
PNR’s regular Metro Manila commuter operations remain suspended to accommodate construction of the North–South Commuter Railway. Passengers should not rely on former routes between Tutuban, Alabang, and stations within the metropolitan area unless PNR officially announces that service has resumed.
Routes and Stations
PNR passenger services operate only on railway sections declared available for travel. Active routes, stations, departure times, and service frequencies may change because of track conditions, maintenance work, rolling-stock availability, weather, and railway construction.
Passengers should check PNR’s latest official announcements before going to a station. A route that previously operated may be temporarily shortened, suspended, or assigned a revised timetable.
Tickets and Fares
Tickets are generally purchased at the departure station before boarding. Passengers should arrive early enough to confirm the schedule, obtain a ticket, and proceed to the correct platform.
Fares depend on the route, destination, and applicable passenger classification. Travelers seeking statutory discounts should bring a valid identification card and any supporting document required by Philippine regulations.
Baggage and Passenger Assistance
Passengers may carry personal belongings that can be safely accommodated without blocking aisles, doors, platforms, or seating areas. Large, hazardous, prohibited, or improperly secured items may not be accepted.
Accessibility facilities vary among stations and trains. Passengers who require mobility assistance should contact PNR or coordinate with station personnel before traveling whenever possible.
Getting to and From Stations
Jeepneys and Local Buses
Many PNR stations are located near roads served by jeepneys, buses, and other local public transportation. Routes and boarding points depend on the station and municipality.
Tricycles and Taxis
Tricycles, taxis, and other local vehicles may be available outside selected stations. Passengers should use authorized transport services and confirm the fare before beginning the journey when no meter is used.
Private Vehicles
Road access, passenger drop-off areas, and parking availability differ among stations. Travelers using private vehicles should confirm local parking arrangements before departure.
